My Objective for these figure drawings was to study forms of people and animals from life to gain a better understanding of their natural, three-dimensional structures. I was also attempting to adopt a more gestural style in order to expand the diversity of my portfolio.
What I feel was successful in these pieces is the depiction of the forms and proportions correctly on the paper in addition to interesting compositions and angles.
When I figure draw, I start with the basic skeleton of a sketch, a gesture drawing, and then move into a contour to add form to the subject as I move into the more detailed work. I also try to use a lot of negative space to block in values or shapes that I can see in or around the figure.
